Red Sox vs. Astros – Game Recap – August 2, 2022 – ESPN | Omd Cialis

HOUSTON — Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora feels good about his team with Rafael Devers healthy and back in the lineup and recent additions Eric Hosmer and Tommy Pham.

Devers hit a two-RBI homer on his return from the injured list to lead the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, hours after they took over Hosmer in a trade with San Diego.

The win put Boston to 53-52 and leaves the team two games behind for third place in the wild card playoffs.

“We trust the team,” said Cora. “We trust this group. I’ve been there, done that. And now we just have to play good baseball for two and a half months.”

Devers showed no signs of rust on his return, having been sidelined since July 23 with an infection in his right Achilles tendon. He hit an RBI double in the fourth inning before hitting a tied solo homer with two outs in the sixth to help Boston to their third straight win.

“It’s very important to come to Houston and beat this team, which is one of the best teams in the league, and give that… boost our confidence to a level that we need,” Devers said in Spanish through a translator . “And that’s really good for us.”

Pham played with the Devers double on his debut with the Red Sox after a trade from Cincinnati on Monday.

“We think we’re better if we have these guys in the line-up now,” Cora said.

The trade for Hosmer comes a day after they sent catcher Christian Vázquez to the Astros, a move that had some players concerned the team would give up the season.

Hosmer was part of the deal with Washington for Juan Soto before turning down the trade and the Padres instead sent him to Boston along with two minor leagues and cash against minor league left-hander Jay Groome.

Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford (3-3) had seven hits and one run in six strong innings for his first win since July 4th.

Yordan Alvarez doubled off the wall in left midfield to start Houston’s eights before Austin Davis left Alex Bregman.

Davis knocked out Kyle Tucker before being replaced by Tanner Houck. He retired Aledmys Díaz and Jeremy Peña to end the threat.

Trey Mancini, traded from Baltimore Monday, made his Astros debut as a pinch-hitter to start ninth and landed. Vázquez next made his first appearance for Houston when he hit a trick and he also landed on the floor.

Houck then pulled Jose Altuve back into midfield with a long flyball for his eighth save.

Manager Dusty Baker sent Vázquez out with the pregame line-up card, and he tossed his cap to his teammates on the away bench.

Houston’s Cristian Javier (6-7) gave up four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in six innings to lose his fourth straight decision after winning the previous three.

“Javier was good,” Baker said. “He was good at his fastball. It was just too much Devers. We threw him tons of fastballs last year and he caught a few tonight.”

Javier didn’t allow a hit until Pham selected with an out in the fourth. Devers then doubled on a liner to right field to score Pham and tie it at 1-all.

There were two outs in the sixth when Devers connected his shot to right field to make it 2-1.

Jose Altuve hit a leadoff double and scored on a single from Yuli Gurriel to give Houston a 1-0 lead.

A day after trading for Vázquez and Mancini, the Astros bolstered their bullpen Tuesday by acquiring Atlanta left-hander Will Smith for starter Jake Odorizzi. Smith arrived at the Astros dugout early in the game and greeted several of his new teammates before heading to the dugout, where he exchanged hugs and handshakes with his teammates.
